These pieces are the visual manifestation of the vibrating nature of all things. At a concert when the music is loud and the air in the room is alive if one closes ones eyes and tries to imagine how the sound looks this is what one sees. I like the notion of how the world must feel to a dog who smells with a thousand times the sensitivity of the human nose. Every breeze must be a kaleidoscopic torrent of information. Alight is one moment. One morning while out in the yard with a cup of coffee, a buzzing next to my head turned out to be not a bumblebee but a baby hummingbird. Alight contains that motion just then. It could be the hum of electrons circling, that beating of miniscule wings or a light shining through the canopy. Alight is about motion..... I have always had an extremely active dream life yet I awoke from this dramatic experience profoundly shaken. I dreamt I was in a gallery in Europe, Paris I think, looking at these oversize canvasses of tabletop still lifes-boring, flowers-in-vases kind of pictures, but huge scale, four feet by six feet. Someone said to me, Relax. Just look. Let your eyes stay with the image. So I did. And waited. This huge painting of blue flowers very gently, silently, began to move. The blossoms swayed as if a breeze from an open window in an adjoining room was filtering through the house. I could see tiny movements of leaves and a shimmer on the glass of the vase, highlights shifting with the motion of the flowers. I was floored. A person had managed to paint motion. Somehow with his paint he captured the subtle pulsing of life in a vase of blue and white flowers on a table. The dream continued with other canvasses in the salon, my search to find the man and his gift to me of a piece of his work. But the crux of the experience for me was an overwhelming sensation of magic and clarity, a realization of art having an active soul. A good piece of art moves. It has a dynamic presence in our reality. It should not be a static thing on the wall. These wall panels are impossible to reproduce. The art is the dance of light. The sculpture of the piece is its depth; the real essence of the piece is its three-dimensionality. That is what this work is all about. The art of these pieces is their effect. The sculpture in its pure sense is immaterial. I create these pieces listening to music. Paul Klee once remarked Art renders visible. If one could see music this is what it would look like. If one could see quantum mechanics, the elemental motion of atoms, this is what it would look like. If one could see that invisible buzz that one feels when passion is vibrating your being, this is what you would see. My work is an attempt to portray the invisible-its kinetic magic, fleeting, ephemeral, powerful... These pieces respond to light, obviously. Twilight, candlelight, halogen bulbs, ambient light, direct sun all generate different experiences. These panels will reward scrutiny and change with the time of day. Look very closely and you will find a full spectrum; the scratch lines act as a diffraction grating to spread light into its component hues. Look across the surface of the panel and you will find a perfect mirror reflecting objects in the room quite clearly. In my dream I found the power of true art. For years I have studied the interference patterns generated when a grid is placed over a grid. The work is in its essence a creation of space where there is no space - a purity and power unique to this medium. Etched stainless steel in particular creates dimensionality. A painting or a photograph can be the same no matter where one stands in relation to it. At close range one may see brushstrokes, or pixels or screen-print dots but the image hanging on the wall is the same image wherever one stands. My work creates objects in space. Consistent relationships exist in the defined space of the panel. True parallax holds within the image so that things in front of other things maintain their spatial dynamic as a viewer walks around the room. When one first sees the panel there is an immediate sense of depth. With patient viewing and movement comes the realization that one is looking into the panel. Eyes are now focused on objects behind the surface plane. Ones eyes can even find brushwork or elements which project off the surface plane, objects which our fingers confirm do not in fact exist in the room or in the air in front of the panel. By manipulating specific tools and juxtaposing these projecting and receding elements, space is created. As one moves about the room elements will come into view and disappear. Other elements will shift from black to bright white and black again. From every vantage a different image appears, and no two people standing in the room are ever seeing the exact same piece. From a distance the piece can completely dematerialize as an object and exist only as field of light as though there were a hole in the wall into a humming, shifting portal of energy. Up close one can look behind objects and study the background drifting away. Closer still and the scratch lines refract light into spectral colors. The surface can be hard, tangible, right there, or facetted, glinting with no sense of place. Once the viewer is engaged and looking into the space a dialogue has begun. As an example, I can make a panel, which depicts water, the shore with pine trees and mountains in the background and clouds drifting by.... But this is a closed experience. There it is, trees and water. Good art has the power to engage the viewer, to demand inquiry and reward with new information. These panels fulfill that role but also are about the process itself. Inspection reveals elements-big strokes, minute features. Further inspection reveals relationships between elements. Still further reveals the pursuit in the viewer of the intentions of the artist and now the loop is complete. What am I trying to do? What are we looking at anyway? Are these birds or nebulae? Are these waves or bamboo?Duchamp remarked that good art is a dialogue between the artist and viewer. Paul Klee once said, Art renders visible. What the viewer sees is the dialogue between us. He sees the workings of my mind and hands and tools to engage the perception of the person in the gallery. He finds radiance and confusion and . . . moss, perhaps. He finds distance and scale and harmony. He finds chaos and flowers and radiation, moonlight, dark matter, and conflict. He has peered into the hours of creation and he finds himself wondering what is random and what is intentional and if the randomness might be intentional. Welcome. January 15, 2010 : Whats the point? The crux of this is dialogue. You look and see things and wonder what the intention might have been. Or, Did he mean to put that scratchy thing right there? And why? As soon as this occurs the dialogue with me has started. Im not even in the room and you are questioning what I was trying to do with that tool which made that mark. My mind and your mind, and you and you and you..., to quote one of my favorite Adrian Belew songs. Its all about control. I want you to be engaged enough to squint, to wander back and forth, to see the jet black in a white field... If you think Louise Nevelson, then I have you. Or Pollock with the motion frozen. Or Rothko with the hovering field of energy... Google Hubble images or the Large Hadron Collider and you will start to feel the tone of this dialogue. Last Saturday I snowshoed up Cascade Mountain in the Adirondacks on a mint, blue sky day and descended in waist high fluff. Can you find that in Jaco and the Twink? There are snow crystals, diamonds in the sun, sparkling dust filtering down. There is the rush of gravity, inexorably pulling me to the ground. It falls in the category of what I call energy field pieces that are not meant to portray anything other than the strength of the stuff itself and which nearly always fill the frame entirely, suggesting continuation in all directions. The dance of the hand coupled with the dimensionality of the tools output is the essence of the piece. As one would look at a Jackson Pollock or a Mark Rothko piece and try to determine the artists intention, so must one approach this panel. This is about tension and release, coiling and uncoiling. In truth, it is a piece about all that energy when two individuals are drawn together. It is physical, fields of magnetism that pull two people together, invisible made visible. I started just over a year ago to make pieces of spare simplicity. Six elements or less was my charge as though the confines of a sonnet could liberate some other forces in the work.
